For the past 9 weeks I have been co-leading a course on Monday nights looking at the gospel according to Mark. Tonight we discussed some of the exchanges Jesus had with the teachers of the law who questioned him. Interestingly, the questions these teachers asked sprung not out of a humble desire to learn, but because they wanted to trick and trap Jesus.
As a lead in question I asked the group “if Jesus were sitting with us tonight, what question would you ask him?”.
One of the group would offer a question in the form of a request – “(would you) show me your glory?” Another would ask for assurance in their salvation. One of the group members gave an interesting response – “what if Jesus couldn’t answer the question I had for him?”. I wasn’t sure what to say – surely Jesus could answer any question! Yet she was making reference to Mark 13:52 when Jesus speaks of his return –
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
It’s a true and interesting point – this is perhaps the one question that Jesus couldn’t answer!
That question aside, what would you ask Jesus were you given the chance?
