I was searching for the website of an event in Canberra named ‘Soul in the City‘. Guess what Google gave me first?

Casino Canberra – the heart and soul of the city

You’ve got to be kidding?

The Casino makes this claim on the basis of its community contributions, but says that:

“Our most dramatic contribution is the one we make directly to the community through our government. Total contributions to the ACT are now $219 million through taxes…” (link)

So people lose their money at the Casino, the Casino is taxed for these profits, the government gets the taxes, and the Casino is proud of this, and sees this as a good way that it is involved in the community?! As an individual I couldn’t say “by far the most dramatic contribution I make directly to the community is through our government, via my taxes”. But at least if I did say that, I could say that the money I contributed in taxes wasn’t accumulated as a result of someone else losing their money.

Come on marketing team at Casino Canberra, you can do better than that.

  1. I came across your blog on Technorati. Nice site layout. I will stop by and read more soon.

They say that the State Governments are Australia’s most addicted gamblers.
They rely on casino and poker machine tax so much they find it difficult/impossible to bring in regulations to stop problem gambling. The fact that the casino advertises their ‘contributions’ is just as warped though, you’re totally right.
