Every Tuesday morning I meet with my ‘boss’, Paul, to read the Bible and pray. This morning we were at one of the local cafes and were chatting and reading the Bible. One of the waitresses saw us reading the Bible and came up to us (we’re familiar faces due to our regular attendance at the cafe!) and said “so boys, give me some words of inspiration for today”. So Paul opened up to 1 John 4:9-10:
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Paul explained from the passage that love isn’t really about feelings, but about actions. God has demonstrated love to us in the most striking way, not just with words but with actions, sending his son to die as a sacrifice for our sins.
She thanked us for sharing this with her, and said she really needed to hear that today. As far as I can tell she isn’t a Christian, but this showed me that we all need the encouragement that comes from God’s word, for as Jesus said, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.
