Very rarely am I at home and think “I need a new shirt” or “I need a new CD”. Yet when I visit the shops, I am overcome by all the things that I need – things I never knew I needed until I visited the shops.
Shops are geared at getting you and me to buy. They’ll do whatever it takes to convince us that we don’t have what we need, and what we have we need more of.
Got an ipod? Get the newer/bigger/shinier/smaller one.
Got clothes? Get the latest, more fashionable ones.
Saturday was my first visit to the shops in 3 months. I realised I haven’t missed the shops at all. I realised I felt quite satisfied with all I had, until I visited the shops. It’s easier to be content when you don’t put yourself in the way of messages and advertising that try and convince you to be otherwise.
