In February this year, this message was displayed as a poster outside churches, and in postcard format around Australia. Outreach Media are involved in promoting the good news about Jesus using provocative advertising in targeted media channels.
Not surprisingly, this poster stirred up a storm, and both the amount and type of discussion that the campaign has caused is quite interesting to note. Just type ‘Jesus loves Osama’ into Google and you can access a range of news sites and discussion forums debating the truth of the message and the effectiveness of the medium. What impact does this poster have on you?

Hey Steve, likewise. I enjoyed meeting you guys the other day. It was a really fun day.
In response to your post here about the ‘Jesus Loves Osama’ poster, I wonder whether this is an example of being provocative for the sake of it. I think, while this is biblically a true statement, it is a slightly deceitful statment. It suggests that Jesus doesn’t care that Osama is doing evil, but instead that Jesus is waiting with his arms out ready to give Osama a big hug.
This I think is misleading because if Osama does meet Jesus face to face today as an unrepentant sinner, he’s getting anything but a big hug.
But at the same time it does suggest what the sign writers were going for – Osama isn’t too far gone.
Thanks for the comment Josh, it’s good to think this through. The potential for mis-understanding is certainly there. However, I think this provides a hook to get people thinking, and discussing who Jesus loves, and why he would love them.
Does Jesus love Osama any more or less than he loves anyone else who doesn’t yet know him? Certainly not. Osama, like all who don’t know Jesus needs to ask him for forgiveness and live to honour Jesus.
I think the beauty of this three-word statement is that whatever you have done, whoever you are, Jesus loves you. This love simultaneously accepts you as you are, and demands that you change.
