Have you heard the new song by Pink? I heard it on the radio and the lyrics were quite moving – here’s a taste of the first two verses (full lyrics here):

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let’s pretend we’re just two people and
You’re not better than me.
I’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

Pink concludes the song by asking the question “How do you sleep at night? How do you walk with your head held high?” Pink is highly critical of the President and the injustices that continue in America under his leadership. I think I really understand where Pink is coming from – we live in a world where so much is messed up and isn’t as it should be. I also agree that our leaders can and should do more.

But are Pink’s expectations of her President realistic? How much is in the realm of our leaders to control? You can restrict gun ownership, but people will still kill each other. You can increase food production, but people will still go hungry. You can encourage respect and consideration for others, but there will still be domestic violence and schoolyard bullying.

Our leaders could have the best intentions, act in the best of their knowledge with all their time and energy and yet the world would remain imperfect. I look forward to the day when Jesus, the world’s king and saviour will return and right the world’s wrongs and correct all the injustices that our leaders will never be able to correct.

I’m reminded of this great story:

    “The Star Thrower.”

A young man was jogging on the beach one morning when he saw an old man ahead of him bending down and picking up starfish and throwing them into the sea one by one. As he came close the young man asked, “What are you doing?” The old man answered, “There was a storm last night and many starfish were washed high up onto the beach. If I don’t throw them back, the sun will kill them by noon.” The young man laughed and said, “You are a fool old man. The beach is miles long and there are thousands of starfish stranded on it. You can’t get to them all before the sun dries them out and kills them. What you are doing, old man, just doesn’t matter.” The old man threw another starfish into the safety of the waves and said, “It mattered to that one!”
