Thumbs up for family night

I just returned home after spending a week in New Zealand. For the first five nights I stayed with a family in Auckland – they are relatives of a friend of mine. It was a lot of fun and it was really interesting to live with another family and see how they relate to each other.

One thing I thought was great was family night. Each Wednesday night is family night, and as much as is possible, each family member is expected to be at home with the rest of the family. At first I thought this expectation was a bit full on, yet I soon realised how much they enjoyed spending time with each other, and they were disappointed when someone couldn’t be there.

Family night didn’t involve any preparation or spectacular props – just watching Lost and Prison Break whilst eating Trumpets (Cornettos). Family night gets two thumbs up from me – in a world that’s increasingly busy and where we struggle to make time for what’s important, I was really impressed by the simple step this family had made to spend time with each other.
